چکیده
Optical networking poses a number challenges for Generalized MultiProtocol Label Switching (GMPLS). Fundamentally, optical technology is an analog rather than digital technology whereby the optical layer is lowest in the transport hierarchy and hence has an intimate relationship with the physical geography of the network. This contribution surveys some of the aspects of optical networks that impact routing and identifies possible GMPLS responses for each: (1) Constraints arising from the design of new software controllable network elements, (2) Constraints in a single all-optical domain without wavelength conversion, (3) Complications arising in more complex networks incorporating both all-optical and opaque architectures, and (4) Impacts of diversity constraints.

متن کاملA Novel Protection Guaranteed, Quality of Transmission Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment Algorithm for All-optical Networks
Transparent All Optical Networks carry huge traffic and any link failure can cause the loss of gigabits of data; hence protection and its guarantee becomes necessary at the time of failure. Many protection schemes were presented in the literature, but none of them speaks about protection guarantee. Also, in all optical networks, due to absence of regeneration capabilities, the physical layer i...
متن کاملConsidering transmission impairments in Routing Wavelength Assignment algorithms
We face the Routing and Wavelength Assignment problem considering as constraints the physical impairments that arise in all-optical networks. We propose a simple model for the physical layer considering both static and dynamic impairments. It is based on simulation of signal propagation in order to characterize each lightpath with a reliability parameter.
متن کاملA Framework for the Control of Wavelength Switched Optical Networks (WSONs) with Impairments
As an optical signal progresses along its path, it may be altered by the various physical processes in the optical fibers and devices it encounters. When such alterations result in signal degradation, these processes are usually referred to as "impairments". These physical characteristics may be important constraints to consider when using a GMPLS control plane to support path setup and mainten...
متن کاملLight-tree routing under optical power budget constraints
It has been widely recognized that physical-layer impairments, including power losses, must be taken into account when optical connections are routed in transparent networks. We study the problem of constructing light-trees under optical-layer power budget constraints, with a focus on algorithms that can guarantee a certain level of quality for the signals received by the destination nodes. We ...
